EARN A PINK BELT




This is the Spouse Thingy and I (you might not recognize me without the neon pink hair, but it'll be back!)

We have been involved in the breast cancer community for several years, raising funds, walking, and crewing for both Komen and Avon, and this year I am walking for Avon in San Francisco, and we're both walking for Komen in San Diego.

These walks require a lot of fundraising. And rather than just ask for money, we wanted to give people a way to have some fun along with us: we're all warriors in this fight, and we get damned tough doing it. So why not have something to show for all those miles? I have a history in the martial arts, and many billions of years ago was a decently ranked competitor in TaeKwonDo. And let me tell you...this fight is much harder than anything I did in the ring.

It is a fight.

So we want you to walk along with us --or swim, bike, run, jog, whatever works for you-- and by racking up 500-1000 miles in a calendar year, you can earn your warrior stripes with a pink belt...and a t-shirt!


SO...WHAT HAPPENS ONCE YOU'VE REACHED YOUR FUNDRAISING MINIMUMS?

Once we hit our fundraising minimums for the year, anything else raised will be donated to another walker who has not yet hit the magic number that will allow them to walk. The day our walks are funded, we will look for others who still need donations.

CAN I DETERMINE WHERE MY FEES GO?

Yes. If you prefer Avon over Komen, or vice-versa, I will honor your wishes and you fees will be donated toward that particular walk, whether it's my event or another walker's. (Just make a note of this in the message box on Paypal.)

WHY 500 MILES?
 
Anyone preparing for a 40-60 mile walk will pound out 500-600 miles during their training. Most of the training takes place over a 16 week or 24 week period, and their lives revolve around getting those miles in so that they can walk the distance of their events. There will be weeks where they walk 15 miles one day, 13 the next, and then follow it up a week later with an 18 mile day followed by 15. They endure shin splints, blisters, pain, doubt, and fear...and still face it head on, because the cause is greater than the pain.

You'll have a year to walk those miles; walk 500 along with us. Or, if you want a challenge, aim for 1000.

HOW DO YOU KNOW I REALLY DID 500 MILES?

This is all on the honor system. Join us at The Pink Belt Project on Facebook; you can report and record your miles there, or just talk.

WHY DO YOU WALK?

It's hard to explain, but if you have ever walked that walk, you understand it.

If you're preparing to walk that walk, you probably fear it, just a little bit...but the walk is what you can do, and you'll do it in spite of the pain and the time crunch. You do it because it's what you can do, and every little bit helps.

You are a fighter.

Embrace it.

SO WHAT'S THE PINK BELT PROJECT?

The Pink Belt Project is two things: a way for us to raise funds for our own and for others' walks,  as well as an acknowledgment of what we are: warriors in this fight. Participation is simple. Commit to walking at least 500 miles in the next 365 days. If you are registered to walk in a Komen 3 Day or you're an Avon 39er, you're going to easily walk those miles.

If you support someone who walks for charity, this is a way to get a taste of what they go through in all the training miles. Pledge to walk 500 miles this year--that's less than 2 miles a day--in honor of the people you support who walk, raise money, cry for those we've lost, and literally bleed, all in the name of finding a cure.

If you participate in other events--walking, running, swimming, biking, anything--and you want the miles you rack up to count for something extra, signing on to earn your pink belt is a way make a difference.

If you just want a springboard into being more active and want the effort to help someone else, earn your pink belt.

100% of the proceeds raised from the Pink Belt Project will be donated to someone walking in a Komen 3 Day event or in an Avon 39 mile event.
